I was born and raised in Buffalo, New York. I earned a B.S. in Chemistry and B.A. in Physics from the University of Rochester, 1985 - 1989, where I did research with George McLendon. In 1996 I completed a Ph.D. in Chemistry at the California Institute of Technology working with Daniel Weitekamp. From 1996 to 1999 I was a postdoctoral fellow at the U.S. Army Research Laboratory, working in collaboration with Doran Smith of the U.S. Army Research Laboratory, Raul Fainchtein of the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, and Lee Harrell of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. In 1999 I joined the faculty of Cornell University. At Cornell I am presently a Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology and a member of the field of Materials Science and Engineering.
